Many formations contain the mineral anhydrite, the anhydrous form of calcium sulfate (CaSO4), which has limited solubility in live hydrochloric acid (HCl) solutions. As the acid is progressively spent to near completion, calcium sulfate can precipitate out as needle-like crystals. If this occurs in the formation or during flowback, the newly-etched channels created by the stimulation treatment can become blocked, decreasing permeability.

Traditionally, addressing the issues associated with anhydrite inhibition has involved a two-step process using HCl blends with calcium chloride salt and a scale inhibitor. Trican’s SI-10 is an efficient and effective one-step scale inhibitor that works in a variety of well types. SI-10 is designed to reduce the dissolution of the anhydrite and prevent precipitation that may occur after the acid has spent without the use of calcium chloride, saving both time and money.
